A man has been arrested on suspicion of setting fire to Andy Carroll’s chrome-plated Range Rover. The 22-year-old Liverpool striker was still with Newcastle United when his vehicle was attacked last October.

Carroll was staying with his then club captain Kevin Nolan in Ponteland, Northumberland, as part of bail conditions after being charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend. Graffiti relating to the charge was daubed on a garage wall at Nolan’s home, but the case against Carroll, who signed for his new club for £35m in January, was dropped.

Northumbria police said it had arrested a man at Newcastle airport as he flew back into the country. He has been bailed until August. A spokesman said: “On Tuesday police arrested a 33-year-old man from the Whitley Bay area in connection with an arson that happened in Darras Road, Ponteland, on 20 October 2010.”

Carroll had bought the Range Rover to celebrate signing a five-year contract with his boyhood club.
