Manchester City are aiming to complete a €35m deal for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko within the next seven days after the German club paved the way for the Bosnia international to move to Eastlands.

Manager Roberto Mancini is hopeful of concluding a deal before the FA Cup trip to Leicester on Jan 9, but Dzeko would not be eligible for that tie.

Mancini said: “We have the chance to win the league this year and the decisive factor could be Edin Dzeko. This player can decide titles and that is why we want him.”

Dzeko, 24, has been a Manchester City target for the past 18 months having been identified by former manager Mark Hughes.

And the prolific forward made clear his determination to sign for City by emailing the club in August in an effort to accelerate the move and allay the English club’s fears that he had set his sights on a move to Italy.

Wolfsburg’s refusal to lower their €50m valuation of the player in the summer prompted City to abandon their pursuit of the towering forward.

But Wolfsburg’s struggles in the Bundesliga this season have all but ended hopes of Champions League qualification next season, ensuring that the club are now ready to cash in on their number one asset.

City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan has made it clear to Mancini that he will provide the necessary reinforcements in January to help edge the club to the title this season.

And Dzeko’s arrival would provide Mancini with formidable firepower alongside Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Emmanuel Adebayor.

One player set to leave Eastlands, however, is Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz, who is close to agreeing a loan move Lazio which would become permanent in the summer.
