Chelsea would face competition for Marco van Basten’s services if they tried to appoint him as their next manager.

Van Basten is among the favourites to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, who appears resigned to losing his job at the end of the season.

Reports have claimed Guus Hiddink, rumoured to be Roman Abramovich’s number one target, has recommended Van Basten to the Blues’ billionaire owner due to his own reluctance to re-enter frontline club management.

Former Holland boss Van Basten has been out of work for more than two years after quitting Ajax but he has been linked recently with Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina.

Unlike Turkey manager Hiddink and another leading candidate, Porto’s Andre Villas-Boas, the 46-year-old would be available immediately and without the need for compensation.

It is understood Van Basten is currently mulling over more than one job offer, although he is aware of the speculation linking him with Chelsea.

Agent Perry van Overeem told Press Association Sport: “He’s just waiting for the right job to come along and looking forward to getting back into the game again.”

Van Overeem confirmed there had been no formal approach from Chelsea and was reluctant to discuss whether Van Basten would be interested in taking over at Stamford Bridge while Ancelotti remains at the helm.

He added: “As long as clubs are working with their managers, it’s not really useful to say whether he would be interested in any particular job.”
