For all their determination Blackburn were left empty-handed and manager Steve Kean knows they will have to show some extra guile if they are to avoid relegation.

An early own goal from Scott Dann and a late strike by Gabriel Obertan handed Blackburn their ninth league defeat at home, but Kean’s men will be left wondering how Newcastle stole victory after they dominated Alan Pardew’s side.

Yohan Cabaye, the combative Newcastle midfielder, was handed a three-match ban for his stamp on Brighton’s Adam El-Abd but it was his replacement who played a big part in the opening goal after 12 minutes . After Jason Lowe was caught napping, Leon Best nipped in before sliding the ball across to Ryan Taylor and his timid strike took a huge deflection off the unfortunate Dann before beating Paul Robinson who had already committed himself in the opposite direction.

Anthony Modeste, on loan from Bordeaux until the end of the season, was making his full debut for Rovers but it was defender Gäel Givet who had the hosts’ first chance of the half. However, the Frenchman’s first attempt from close range was cleared off the line by Danny Simpson before his second attempt flew just past the upright.

Blackburn were dealt their own sliver of luck just before the break when referee Phil Dowd awarded them a rather soft penalty after Simpson was adjudged to have brought down Modeste. However, David Dunn’s spot-kick was saved by Tim Krul who recovered to deny Morten Gamst Pedersen’s follow-up.

After the frantic pace of the first half, the opening stages of the second were rather tame with Modeste wasting a good opportunity after he broke clear of the Newcastle defence but his timid lob was easily cleared by Simpson who had done well to track back.

Dann later missed the chance to earn his reprieve when he headed straight at Krul and, as Blackburn continued to push for an equaliser, space was left at the back for Obertan to break through in stoppage time to seal Newcastle’s win.
