For those that doubted his appointment as manager, this was Terry Connor’s first step towards proving them wrong as Wolves came back from two goals behind to earn a valuable point against careless Newcastle United.

Newcastle were two goals up with the minimum of fuss, hardly breaking sweat as they took control of the game inside the first 20 minutes.

They took the lead after only six minutes when Papiss Demba Cisse scored his second goal in as many home games following his January move from Freiburg.

Demba Ba had been denied by Wayne Hennessey, but Cisse had pounced on the rebound. He cleverly teed up on the on-rushing Cheick Tiote and when his shot spun back into his path, the £10m new boy stabbed it home.

Hennessey did well tip over a rasping drive from Danny Simpson minutes later, but he could not get near another from Jonas Gutierrez, the Argentinian give time to control the ball and get his head up. And then the Magpies switched off.

Wolves, who had dominated possession in the first 45 minutes and were unlucky not to score when Kevin Doyle’s header fell just wide, deserved their little bit of good fortune at the start of the second-half, as Matt Jarvis’ shot looped up via a slight deflection of Danny Simpson and dropped into the far corner.

Newcastle had been drifting along on cruise control after moving two goals in front and the visitors were revitalised by the goal, David Edwards just unable to reach the ball with Newcastle defenders stood watching him run in from midfield.

Alan Pardew looked bewildered as things turned against his side and just seconds after sending Danny Guthrie and Hatem Ben Arfa, Wolves were level as Doyle beat the woeful Mike Williamson in the air. His initial header was saved by Tim Krul, but the Irishman was still able to stab the rebound in from close range.

Ben Arfa came closest to a winner with a curling shot which almost found the bottom corner, but Wolves and Conner were well worth their point.
