Aston Villa supporters called for Alex McLeish to be sacked during this, the dreariest of goalless draws.

Following Emile Heskey’s introduction in place of Marc Albrighton, disdain cascaded from the away end throughout the remaining 20 minutes of the match.

McLeish’s problems were made worse when Darren Bent suffered suspected ankle ligament damage after his foot trapped on the soft top layer of the DW Stadium’s sub-standard pitch. The striker now seems certain to pull out of the England squad that faces Netherlands on Wednesday.

It was an unsatisfactory afternoon generally. The opening minutes summed up the season’s so far of both teams. Wigan began, attacked and created an opportunity when Jean Beausejour crossed for Franco di Santo. The Argentine tumbled before Emmerson Boyce and James McCarthy collided into one another in a comical manner. Instantly, Villa were at the other end, but Robbie Keane scuffed his shot.

Wigan find it hard to score at home; Villa have problems away and this was their seventh draw on the road. A 0-0 scoreline was predictable.

After Keane’s miss, the Irishman – playing in his last game for Villa before returning to Los Angeles Galaxy – fed Bent with an adroit pass. Bent, usually so convincing from such range could not, however, beat Ali Al Habsi. Moments later, Stephen Warnock flashed a half-chance wide.

The heavy pitch made passing football problematic. High balls into the box ruled. From the left boot of Jordi Gomez, Antolin Alcaraz should have connected but didn’t. Then Paraguayan Alcaraz became the unlikely supplier this time for Boyce but he contrived to somehow head away from Shay Given’s goal.

The crosses kept coming: Carlos Cuellar headed against team-mate James Collins and shortly after the break, the Spaniard should have scored but his connection was weak.

Keane may have snatched the winner with 10 minutes to go but he was too slow to react to Heskey’s pass. In injury time, Given parried away di Santo’s low drive.
