Apostolos Vellios scored the first goal of the Spaniard’s spell at Goodison Park, but two strikes from Marko Stankovic saw the home side claim victory in a pre-season friendly.

Roberto Martinez suffered defeat in his first game in charge of Everton as the Premier League side lost 2-1 at Austria Vienna on Sunday.

Two goals from Marko Stankovic proved to be enough for the hosts to seal victory in the Austrian capital, with Greek forward Apostolos Vellios scoring the first goal of Martinez’s Everton tenure.

The former Wigan boss plumped for a mix of youth and experience in his starting line-up. Joel Robles made his first appearance for the club, while the likes of Leighton Baines, Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman were named alongside youngsters such as Tyias Browning and Shane Duffy.

Everton went close inside the first minute as Magaye Gueye headed wide from a Baines free-kick, but it was Vienna who grabbed the lead on 12 minutes as Stankovic broke free to round Robles and slot into an empty net.

Martinez’s men continued to push forward despite the early setback, with Baines shooting wide from a direct free-kick.

The visitors remained fragile in defence, however, and were punished further as Stankovic converted from the penalty spot after a handball in the Everton area to double Vienna’s lead after 37 minutes.

Everton’s reply was almost instantaneous, Vellios reducing the deficit just three minutes later.

Martinez rung the changes during the half time interval. Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Mirallas and Victor Anichebe were introduced as Everton searched for a leveller.

Despite Everton’s best efforts it was Vienna who had the most promising chance of the second half, but substitute Sylvain Distin cleared midfielder Florian Mader’s effort off the line after 78 minutes.

That proved to be the final meaningful moment of the contest as Vienna held on to claim the win.
