West Ham United have sacked manager Avram Grant after the 3-2 defeat to Wigan Athletic which confirmed their relegation to the Championship.

A brief statement on the club’s website read: “The club can confirm that Avram Grant is no longer the manager of West Ham United.

“First-team coach Kevin Keen will take charge of the team for the final home match of the season against Sunderland on Sunday 22 May.”

Grant has overseen successive relegation after he was unable to keep Portsmouth in the Premier League last season.

Appointed in the summer, Grant oversaw four successive defeats in his first four games, and West Ham have only rarely threatend to escape relegation since then.

Speaking after West Ham surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Wigan, Grant said: “At 2-2 we had big chances to score and maybe this is the story of our season.

“The fans were great. I feel so sorry we couldn’t do the job we wanted to, but I still believe in the future of this club.”
