Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender, has suggested Arsenal’s Samir Nasri should be the Player of the Year following his starring performance in the 3-1 FA Cup win against Leeds United.

Ferdinand, whose Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney won the award last year, tweeted to specifically praise Nasri while watching Arsenal’s match against Leeds on television.

“Nasri has maybe been player of the season so far … nice goal,” he wrote.

No one from Arsenal has been named PFA Player of the Year since Thierry Henry in 2004 but, unsurprisingly, Nasri is also being endorsed by his team-mates.

“I think coming from a player like Rio Ferdinand, it’s the best compliment he can give Samir,” said defender Bacary Sagna. “I think he’s right. If he keeps playing like this, then he will be the best player this season.”

Arsène Wenger believes that Nasri has become more efficient and mature this season, particularly with his calmness in front of goal.

“He has developed as a footballer and as a person,” said the Arsenal manager.

Nasri, 23, has already been named the French Footballer of the Year for 2010 by France Football magazine, finishing above Chelsea winger Florent Malouda in a poll of French journalists.

The voting forms for the PFA award will be out in the spring.
