Brendan Rodgers has hit out at the vultures trying to exploit England U21 starlet Will Hughes by continually linking him with a move to Liverpool.

Anfield boss Rodgers dampened talk of a January move for the Derby midfielder and instead voiced concerns that Hughes – and Liverpool – are being used.Liverpool are annoyed that several agents have been in touch claiming they represent Hughes, 18, and that they can move him on from Pride Park.

Rodgers’ priority when the transfer window opens is a midfielder who can go straight into the team and denied a bid had been made for Hughes.

“I never normally say anything about speculation about players,” said Rodgers, who speaks to Derby manager Steve McClaren regularly after sending Andre Wisdom there on loan.

“But I do really feel for this young guy. This is a very talented youngster where either a person, or people, are not doing him any favours whatsoever by constantly linking him with coming to Liverpool.

“I read something that we had put in a bid, or that something had been agreed, but there is nothing further from the truth.“He is at an outstanding club in Derby County, he has a great manager and we sent one of our young players there to learn.

“I think Will Hughes is a wonderful young talent. He just needs to play football and for me is probably at the best place he could be.

“I don’t normally comment on speculation but I am because I have the interest of the player at heart. Every day or weekend he will see that he is linked with coming to Liverpool.”

Rodgers, who is preparing for Saturday’s Merseyside derby with Everton, added: “He is in a good place. There is no bid. Nothing. We will do what we do.

“We are always looking for talent, young players, senior players and he, along with many players, is probably one we have looked at.”
