Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Liverpool’s under-performing players of getting Roy Hodgson the sack.

Fergie, a good friend of Hodgson, said the sacked Liverpool boss did not have a good enough squad to succeed at Anfield.

And Manchester United boss Fergie also claimed there was a deliberate campaign on Merseyside to drive Hodgson out of Liverpool.

“We’ve always supported Roy,” said Fergie. “It was disappointing. I think there was obviously a bit of a campaign to get him out. There’s no question about that.

“It’s disappointing because he had the experience to do the job – but not the players obviously.”

With Kenny Dalglish, who succeded Hodgson, agitating for the Liverpool job in the background all season, Fergie said Hodgson was almost doomed from the start of his ill-fated six-month Anfield reign.

“I don’t know the full circumstances of how Roy was operating,” said Fergie. “But you had the feeling through the media that was the case.”
