Tottenham have made an approach to Southampton to check on the availability of Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has targeted the Argentine after sacking Tim Sherwood just two days after the end of the season.Levy wants to know whether Saints would be willing to do business in what promises to be a summer of change at St Mary’s.
And though the initial contact was given short shrift, there has been enough encouragement behind the scenes for Tottenham to keep Pochettino at the top of their wanted list.
Ajax boss Frank De Boer is the other main target and high level talks have already taken place in an attempt to tempt him to White Hart Lane.
But Starsport understands the proven Premier League track record of Pochettino has made him the number one candidate to succeed Sherwood in charge.
Saints are desperate to keep hold of the man who delivered an 8th place finish in the top flight last season playing their brand of entertaining football. It is that performance which has attracted the interest of Levy – and they believe uncertainty over player sales on the south coast this summer could be enough to turn Pochettino’s head.
Highly-rated defender Luke Shaw is destined for a £28m move to Manchester United, while captain Adam Lallana is Liverpool’s main transfer target this summer.
There is almost a resignation at Southampton that the pair will depart, and losing his best players will not go down well with Pochettino at the end of a season when he saw his big boardroom ally Nicola Cortese leave. The former Argentina defender has shown he can succeed not only with an entertaining playing style, but also integrating young talent into the first team – something else Levy is desperate to bring in at Spurs.
Having splashed out £100m on new players last summer, Spurs know they need to get this managerial appointment right having dispensed with Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas Boas and now Sherwood in quick succession.
