Steven Pienaar has rejoined Everton from Tottenham on-loan until the end of the season just minutes before the transfer deadline slammed shut.

Pienaar spent three-and-a-half years at Goodison Park before joining Spurs in January last year for £3million and will now return to Merseyside until May.

The north London club were involved in a number of last-minute deals once again and boss Harry Redknapp admitted it was difficult to get the deal through on time.

Redknapp said: ‘Pienaar wants to go. I’m trying to hide from him. I spoke to (Everton boss) David Moyes at quarter to seven. I said if I could get the player I wanted he could have Steven on loan.’

Pienaar, 29, left Goodison Park to sign a four-year deal at White Hart Lane but has failed to win a regular place in the Spurs line-up.

The move had been rumoured earlier in the day but appeared unlikely after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealed he had been unable to sign the player he wanted as cover.

But a deal was completed after a telephone conversation between Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and his Spurs counterpart Daniel Levy after their sides’ respective games tonight.

The crucial paperwork was submitted just before the 11pm deadline and confirmation announced shortly afterwards.
