Manchester united’s 18-year-old forward Ravel Morrison, one of the brightest prospects at Old Trafford, has had his future cast in doubt after appearing in court on an assault charge.

Morrison attended Salford magistrates’ court on Wednesday charged with assaulting his girlfriend and causing criminal damage. The possibility of a lengthy prison sentence hangs over him if found guilty.

The case was adjourned until 25 May, when he will enter a plea, with Morrison given conditional bail.

Having represented England at every level up to the Under-19s, Morrison signed professional terms with Manchester United on his 17th birthday and ran out for the first team in a Carling Cup match against Wolves last October.

Despite his off-field concerns, Morrison is still scheduled to feature in United’s two-legged youth cup final with Sheffield United later this month, the second leg in Manchester just two days before he is due back in court.

Morrison’s talent was in evidence when he did much to take United to that final, scoring twice to overturn a 2-0 deficit to Liverpool in he quarter finals in a stand out performance.

United beat Chelsea in the semi-finals. The day before that match Morrison was charged with common assault and criminal damage in an alleged incident involving his girlfriend.

Morrison also appeared in Trafford youth court in January this year on an unrelated issue, when he was still 17, and is the subject of a 12-month referral order.
