Wigan have signed Manchester United’s Nick Powell on a season-long loan.

Powell, 19, made just six appearances for United since joining from Crewe Alexandra last summer for around £6m.

In joining the FA Cup holders, he follows in the footsteps of fellow United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who spent 2010-11 on loan at Wigan.

“We obviously had Tom on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, it’s good news,” said Latics chairman Dave Whelan.

England Under-19 international Powell, a product of the respected Crewe youth system, scored against Wigan on his debut in a 4-0 win Old Trafford.

He made two appearances in the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, but has been allowed to move on a temporary basis to a club which will allow him to remain settled in the north-west of England.

Whelan, meanwhile, believes any transfer which could take Wigan midfielder James McCarthy to Everton is unlikely to materialise.

The Republic of Ireland international had been widely tipped to move to Goodison Park as a replacement for Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, who has submitted a transfer requested ahead of an expected move to Manchester United.

“Everton are not matching what we are looking for. We asked for a certain price from Everton for James McCarthy, and they have not come near it,” Whelan said.

“We have to be fair with the player, and our football club. They said they were going to pay us over four years.”
