Stoke City have signed Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland on a season-long loan deal.

Ireland used to play for manager Mark Hughes at Manchester City and is delighted at the prospect of working with him again after being frozen out by Villa boss Paul Lambert.

The midfielder played his best football under Hughes in the 2008-2009 season and will hope a reunion with the manager will get his career back on track.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes told the club’s website: ‘Stephen is a player that Mark knows really well and when the opportunity arose he was keen to add him to his midfield and attacking options.

‘Arguably the most successful period of Stephen’s career to date was when he played for Mark at Manchester City and we hope that he can rediscover that form.’

Ireland joins Austria forward Marko Arnautovic at the Britannia Stadium, who completed his move from Werder Bremen in the early hours of Monday morning and signed a four-year contract.
