Arsène Wenger defiantly claimed that the Premier League title race is still “completely open” even after his Arsenal team squandered yet another lead on Wednesday night and slipped behind Chelsea into third place.

“It is open,” said Wenger. “Chelsea are back in the race. It is down to us to keep our faith and keep battling and we will not always draw when we score three goals.

“We have to fight as we do. This team has a remarkable attitude even if at the moment we are not rewarded with the number of points. We are remarkably consistent. We are on a 16-game unbeaten run.”

Arsenal, though, have drawn four of the last five games during a two-month period that has also seen them exit the Carling Cup, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

On Wednesday night, Wenger had only praise for his players and restricted any criticism of Wojciech Szczesny, who conceded the equalising penalty, to an admission that his goalkeeper had been late in challenging Aaron Lennon.

“The attitude was fantastic,” said Wenger. “We played the game how we wanted to play but we dropped physically in the second half. We controlled the first half. They didn’t create a lot and I also feel that we scored a goal that was not offside.

“After what happened to us on Sunday [against Liverpool], to recover and come back, I personally believe that this team has an outstanding personality. Not many teams would have survived what has happened to us. To me the team doesn’t get enough credit.

“Any team who has been hammered like we have been in the last two months. My team deserves a lot of credit.”
