Manchester United will be forced to pair Chris Smalling with Wes Brown in their crucial Premier League tie against Liverpool on Sunday.

Nemanja Vidic was sent off in Tueasday’s defeat against Chelsea and will be suspended while Rio Ferdinand is still injured following the calf injury he sustained while warming up before the loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers a month ago. With Jonny Evans in and out of favour, it means the Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will turn to Brown.

“I don’t think Rio will be fit for Liverpool,” said Ferguson. “Wes Brown will take over. He has great experience.”

United will be under a certain amount of pressure at Anfield after the 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge left them just four points ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Brown, who has made just two Premier League starts this season, will also be under a certain amount of pressure as he vies to reinvigorate his career at Manchester United.
