Arsenal made a last-minute bid to steal Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen from under the nose of Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger wanted the highly-rated German international at the Emirates to challenge Wojciech Szczesny.AC Milan were also interested in the 21-year-old, who is embroiled in a fight with Manuel Neuer for the Germany No.1 shirt.

The Gunners have a strong contingent of German stars with Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Serge Gnabry all starring – but the lure of La Liga has proved too much for Ter Stegen.

He has penned a pre-contract agreement with Barca and will make an £8.5m move at the end of the season, according to reports in Germany.

Ter Stegen will replace Victor Valdes, who is set to join big-spending Monaco.

The young stopper is considered one of the hottest young prospects in German football and knows he will get first-team football at the Nou Camp with Valdes on his way out.

Despite his tender age, Ter Stegen has played close to 100 games for his hometown club Monchengladbach.
