Arsene Wenger has drawn a line under the intriguing Julian Draxler saga, by insisting no deal will be struck today.

The German midfielder has been inextricably linked with a move to the Gunners, such has been his rise to prominence both domestically and on the European stage with Schalke.

Recent reports have indicated Arsenal are willing to pay £25m to secure Draxler’s signature, but Wenger it seems has abandoned his pursuit.

“No we are not actively pursuing him. In the transfer window, there is always hope but by its very nature, it is artificial,” Wenger said.

“What is concrete is that we are in a strong position in the league and we’re exceeding people’s expectations.

“Results are made on the football pitch and not in the transfer window.”

The Gunners have always been connected with loan deals for Barcelona winger Cristian Tello and Juventus forward Mirko Vucinic, and Wenger recognises the need to bring in more bodies before the 11pm deadline. He added: “Nothing has changed- we are active but not looking.

“We are open minded and active- hopefully opportunities will arise. A loan signing is more likely especially because of Ramsey’s setback.

“A midfielder is the most likely solution. You always have to stay in touch, you have to buy, you have to listen.”
