Virgil-van-Dijk-CelticArsene Wenger will look to address his defensive crisis with an £8m bid for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk in January.

The Gunners had scouts watch the Dutch centre-back against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League and were impressed by what they saw.

Van Dijk was linked with a summer move to the Premier League with both Sunderland and Southampton thought to be interested.

Indeed, the 23-year-old was left out of Celtic’s squad on deadline day over concerns that he may have been affected by the speculation.

The player insisted at the time that he was not interested in a move away and that he remains happy at Parkhead, but hinted at his wish to continuing playing in the Champions League.

And Wenger could now offer Van Dijk the opportunity to do that with a bid of £8m mooted.

Wenger is short on options at the back after seeing Thomas Vermaelen depart for Barcelona and injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny still causing concern.

It now remains to be seen whether Celtic will be tempted to sell after letting Fraser Forster depart for Southampton over the summer for £10m.
