Arsene Wenger has not given up in his pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender and is preparing another bid in the January transfer window.

Arsenal had an offer of £18.5million rejected by the Bundesliga club over the summer, but are prepared to raise that as they seek a replacement for Mikel Arteta.

The Daily Star Sunday report that it may take a bid in excess of £20m to prize him away from Leverkusen.

German international Bender, 24, comes with the recommendation of compatriot Mesut Ozil, signed by Arsenal in the summer for a club record £42.5m.

Buoyed by the summer sales of Andre Schurrle to Chelsea and Dani Carvajal to Real Madrid, plus an influx of Champions League cash, Bayer feel no obligation to sell Bender.

He has made six Bundesliga appearances so far this season, scoring once, and also played against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Bender is also on United’s radar as they seek to galvanise their midfield following a poor start to the season under new manager David Moyes.

Bender’s twin brother, Sven, plays for Borussia Dortmund, who currently top the German league table.
