Arsenal have not given up hope of signing Clement Grenier from Olympique Lyonnais in January.

Reports in France suggest that the Gunners continue to monitor the 22-year-old, who rejected a £6m move to the Emirates over the summer and signed a new contract with Les Gones. But Lyon’s financial problems have not gone away and despite an apparent wealth of midfield options, Arsene Wenger may try to take advantage of the situation to prise Grenier away from the Stade de Gerland.

Over the summer Grenier admitted he was tempted by a possible switch to Arsenal, and has even suggested that his new contract may not keep him at Lyon for long with Juventus also credited with an interest in the French international.

He said: “I have a contract which now runs until 2016. We’ll see what happens here in a year. Anyway, I told the President that whatever happens, I will not leave my club for free.”

Grenier, who has been struggling in the early part of the season but believes his current difficulties will make him a better player.

He added: “Collectively this is a difficult period, but also on a personal level.

This is the first time in my young career things have been complicated for me.”

This is part of my development. You have to be strong and continue to work.”
