Chelsea are lining up a £25m move for Marseille midfielder Gianelli Imbula in January.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with a move for Imbula during the most recent transfer window, only for the player to instead sign for Marseille.

But reports in France suggest that Imbula, who made a £6.3m move from Guingamp in July, remains near the top of Jose Mourinho’s list of priorities.

According to La Provence Chelsea have noted the way Imbula has immediately made an impression in Marseille’s midfield and believe the French club could be persuaded to part with the 21-year-old for a fee in the region of £25m.

The Belgian born midfielder was eligible to represent Congo through his parents but has now pledged his allegiance to France after representing them at Under 21 level.

If Imbula does move to Chelsea in January he will follow in the footsteps of Blues legend Didier Drogba, who also played a single season with Marseille after joining from Guingamp before making a £24m move to Stamford Bridge in 2004.
