Liverpool are snatching in-demand Oussama Assaidi from the clutches of Dutch giants Ajax.

Morocco international Assaidi became one of the hottest properties in Holland last season with a string of exciting performances for his club Heerenveen, and was in talks over a £3million switch to Ajax, the Eredivisie’s reigning champions.

But Brendan Rodgers, who was monitoring the winger’s progress last season when he was Swansea manager, has now moved quickly to seal a deal which should earn Assaidi a £1m a year contract at Anfield.

Rodgers sees the 24-year-old, expected on Merseyside on Friday for a medical, as the perfect addition to his squad as he attempts to add some strength in depth without breaking the bank.

Assaidi has just a year left on his current deal, making him eminently affordable despite his glowing reputation, and his wages won’t be a problem for Liverpool as they look to offload squad members who haven’t justified their sky-high salaries.

Rodgers also expects to complete a loan deal for Real Madrid and Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin before the Premier League kicks off this weekend, but it seems he must now wait until at least the new year to sign Barcelona winger Cristian Tello.

The Liverpool manager is still hoping to seal deals that will move the likes of Joe Cole and Andy Carroll on from Anfield – but only if the terms are attractive to the Reds.

Rodgers has also said he does not want to sell defender Daniel Agger, who has been linked with Manchester City.
