Liverpool are winning the battle against Manchester United to sign the £30m-rated Portuguese international William Carvalho.

Reports in Portugal suggest that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Carvalho, despite claims that his representatives meet with Man United officials in January.Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to add to his squad, and having conceded a dismal 50 goals this season – a defensively minded player is likely to be at the top of that list.
Rodgers is a known admirer of the powerful Sporting Lisbon midfielder who has earned two caps for the Portuguese national side.Manchester United’s interest in the player has waned since David Moyes’ departure last month, and it remains unclear whether boss in waiting Louis Van Gaal is keen to maintain United’s pursuit.
The Scot was determined to land the 22-year-old, with Manchester United scouts being spotted on more than one occasion.Carvalho’s buy-out clause is believed to be £37m – a price that would supersede Liverpool’s previous record signing of Andy Carroll for £35m.
