Manchester United are on red alert to lure Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan to Old Trafford in January.

The German international had been lined up by Arsene Wenger before they snapped up Mesut Ozil.

But now United want him to transform their midfield.

Gundogan, 22, is under contract at Dortmund until 2015 but is refusing to sign a new deal.

He has plenty of admirers at United and David Moyes knows he still needs to strengthen in the middle of the park despite signing Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m on deadline day.

The Red Devils wanted Gundogan back in 2011 and he declared Manchester United were “his dream club”.

But Dortmund swooped to take him from FC Nuremburg for £4m.

The £30m-rated man is currently on the sidelines with a back injury sustained playing for Germany.

It’s meant Gundogan has played just ONE game all season for Dortmund – and reports in his homeland today suggest he could be sidelined until January.

The Dortmund ace revealed contract discussions were ongoing last month but said: “I am not going to make statements on the contents of those talks.

“Everyone has to be patient about it, just like I have to be patient in terms of my current injury.”
