Moneybags Paris St Germain are set to blow the Premier League big guns out of the water in the race to sign Eden Hazard.

The Belgium international is one of the most sought after players in world football and had widely been expected to leave French champions Lille last summer.

However the Ligue 1 outfit stood firm, knowing that another year with them would see his stock rise even further. He is now valued at around £40million.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old forward for some time, while Premier League leaders City have also ramped up their interest with development executive Patrick Vieira recently sent on a scouting mission to watch Hazard.

But all that could be in vain with Qatari-backed PSG expected to offer £45m this January, more even than Real Madrid had been considering making available.

Reports in France suggest that a figure that large would be impossible for modest Lille – who are keen to avoid selling to a domestic rival – to turn down.

Manager Rudi Garcia, though, dismissed the story, joking: ‘It seems they will buy Luchini (Lille’s training ground) too. And I think they are also considering digging the tunnel under the English Channel to Paris. ‘

Earlier this month, Lille’s academy director reiterated his desire to keep old of the club’s prized asset until at least the end of the season.

Jean-Michel Vandamme said: ‘Eden is certainly willing to stay at Lille at least until next summer. Chelsea has been following him the closest.

‘The Spaniards have not manifested themselves yet, but I think they are playing it smart and will call when they know they have to – I’m talking about Real, but also about Barcelona.’

‘The buyer will have to come up with a lot of money – let us say he is not currently to go for less than £40million.’

PSG, who are also making efforts to sign David Beckham, smashed the Ligue 1 transfer record last summer when they lavished £37.5m on Argentine Javier Pastore.
