Edinson-Cavani-PSG1Manchester United have been dealt a new blow in their search for a striker after Paris St-Germain ruled out offering Edinson Cavani in a swap deal for Angel Di Maria.

The Uruguayan striker has re-emerged as the Red Devils top target as they look to replace the departed Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old is valued at £60m and United had been contemplating trying to use Di Maria as a makeweight in a deal.

The winger has failed to settle in Manchester following his arrival for a British record fee of £59.7m from Real Madrid last summer.

PSG are keen to sign the Argentine having missed out on him when he left Madrid due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Starsport revealed this morning that the French champions have made an initial bid of £40m but United were holding out for closer to £50m or a swap move.

However, PSG have informed Old Trafford officials that they will not allow Cavani to leave as part of any deal.

Louis van Gaal has been left frustrated in his attempts to sign a new striker so far this summer with moves for Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Bayern Munich pair Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski being rebuffed.

Spurs insist Kane will be going nowhere after his breakthrough last season despite United being prepared to offer in the region of £45m for the 21-year-old.
