France keeper Hugo Lloris is set to complete a £12million move to Tottenham.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed they have given Lloris permission to speak to Spurs and make a decision on his future.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has made Lloris his No1 target ahead of Birmingham’s emerging England prospect Jack Butland, who is seen as the back-up option.

Lyon have yet to agree a fee with Spurs but the clubs are understood to be close enough to give the deal the green light after Lloris’ negotiations.

Aulas said: “We were close to Tottenham and the decision is now up to Hugo, who must have had a number of contacts with the English club. This transfer can be done at the end of the transfer window.

“Would it be better for us to see him leaving? Since we have an objective to reduce the wage bill, this transfer enters in our programme.

“But if he stays here, we will be very happy.”

France manager Didier Deschamps, who played in the Premier League briefly with Chelsea, added: “I talked with him by phone. He has a choice to make between Lyon and Tottenham. He has until Friday to decide, we will see.”

Lloris would be brought in as the long term number one to succeed from veteran Brad Friedel.

Butland could also yet be on the move, as Southampton and Arsenal have been monitoring developments.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is clearly continuing his extravagant window as, despite the £15m capture of Fulham midfielder Moussa Dembele, they are still in the market for Porto playmaker Joao Moutinho.

Porto are demanding £25m for their man, but Villas-Boas still wants to see if Spurs can get a deal done.

CSKA Moscow midfielder Alan Dzagoev, Shakhtar Donetsk forward Willian and Internacional’s Brazilian number nine Leandro Damiao are still on their hit-list, too.
