Manchester United are lining up a sensational swap deal that would see Shinji Kagawa return to Borussia Dortmund in return for Serbian defender Neven Subotic.

Japanese international Kagawa had a disappointing first season at United and has struggled to win a regular place under David Moyes this season, leading to speculation he may be open to the idea of a move.

Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of Kagawa and has been outspoken in his view that he is being under-utilised at United and would be welcome back in Germany.

And reports in Portugal suggest that United will welcome Dortmund’s interest in January, as they hope to sign Subotic.

According to A Bola, an unlikely swap deal could be on the cards with David Moyes considering defensive reinforcements more of a priority than persevering with a player who does not fit his requirements in Kagawa.

Kagawa recently expressed his disappointment at being substituted in United’s loss to West Brom, saying: “I thought that I would have been able to find some space to create the chances in the second half.

“In that sense I was disappointed. Sure, I wasn’t involved that much. I didn’t touch the ball enough but I was trying to be patient so I didn’t feel that bad.”

It now remains to be seen whether Kagawa is ready to call time on his stint in England, and if so whether a swap deal can be agreed, with Atletico Madrid also credited with an interest in the midfielder.
