Manchester United are to step up their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels as Paris Saint-Germain rule out the sale of Marquinhos.

Marquinhos has been linked with a big-money move to United in the summer, with the £50m arrival of David Luiz from Chelsea likely to see him drop to the Parisians bench. However, PSG boss Laurent Blanc claims the Brazilian centre-back will not be leaving the Parc des Princes.

“Marquinhos isn’t going anywhere, that’s for sure. He won’t be leaving. We’re counting on him,” Blanc said.

With Marquinhos staying at PSG, United are likely to make Hummels their number one transfer target. And the Germany defender, currently in Brazil with the World Cup squad, has already announced that he would be open to an Old Trafford switch.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new centre-back after the departures of Rio Ferdinand (free) and Nemanja Vidic (Inter Milan).
