Nicolas-Gaitan-BenficaManchester United are back in the driving seat for Nicolas Gaitan.

The Benfica winger was thought to be on his way to Atletico Madird but the Spaniards have reportedly pulled out of the deal.

The Portuguese club were holding out for Gaitan’s £25m release clause to be triggered and Atleti did not want to go that high.

Portuguese daily A Bola are reporting that Benfica would rather deal with United as they feel that gives them the best chance of striking a deal.

United have reportedly offered £21.5m plus a player to tempt Benfica into a sale.

Gaitan is seen as a cost-effective replacement for Angel di Maria who has reportedly agreed a deal with Paris St-Germain today.

Di Maria joined United for a British-record £59.7m fee 12 months ago but has failed to live up to that high billing at Old Trafford.
