Liverpool were left to regret a vital penalty miss as Manchester United target Viktor Fischer put their Under 19s to the sword with a clinical hat-trick in the NextGen semi-final at St Helens’ Langtree Park.

Mounting interest in how Liverpool’s youngsters might fare against one of Europe’s most renowned academies led to long queues outside and a 30-minute kick-off delay.

Fischer wasted no time, though, as he fired Ajax into an early lead and went on to torment Liverpool with two more goals and two assists.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder showed why Sir Alex Ferguson is interested. His crisp early strike gave Ajax the lead but Liverpool should have levelled only for Mickey van der Hart to save Suso’s penalty.

Ajax made them pay with a Lesley de Sa goal and a second for Fischer either side of half-time. Davy Klaassen added the fourth and fifth goals before Fischer completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes still to play.

Chelsea meanwhile have signed up for the NextGen for the next three years.
