Manchester United have identified Paris Saint-Germain marksman Edinson Cavani as their top transfer target.

David Moyes is set to be handed a £150 million warchest to splash on players this month although they are yet to make a foray into the market so far.Though speculation has mounted that they could bid a club record £37m for unsettled Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata, the future of Wayne Rooney has become a more pressing concern.

Reports surfacing in France indicate that Moyes has identified Cavani as his top striking target should Rooney leave Old Trafford.

Rooney is entering the final 12 months of a £250,000-a-week contract, and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho tried to stoke the tensions by suggesting the 28-year-old could be sold to a ‘non-direct rival’.

French paper L’Equipe ascertains United are keen on Cavani although they may have to wait until the summer to table a bid.

Cavani, who joined PSG in the summer for £53 million from Napoli, is thought to be increasingly frustrated at the Parc des Princes and is open to a move away from the club.Other reports have also suggested that PSG could be willing to offload up to four players in an effort to snatch Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

Moyes has scouted all over Europe in recent weeks, with the likes of Julian Draxler and Ilkay Gundogan on his shopping list, but with the champions languishing in seventh in the Premier League table, he may have to lower his sights.

Whether Moyes does pull off an incredible coup by landing Cavani is another matter altogether.
