Manchester United are exploring the possibility of offering Shinji Kagawa to Borussia Dortmund in January – in order to beat Arsenal to the signature of Germany star Marco Reus.

Kagawa left Dortmund for United in June 2012 for a fee of around £17.5million, signed by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, the Japanese playmaker has not fully settled at Old Trafford and has been sparingly used by new boss David Moyes.

And despite starting in the win over Arsenal, Kagawa was utilised on the left-wing away from his favoured central midfield position.

With Dortmund keen on bringing the 24-year-old back to the Bundesliga, Moyes is weighing up an ambitious swap deal involving Reus.

Arsenal have been linked with the German forward in recent transfer windows, but United are intent on pipping their rivals to his services.

Reus has scored eights goals for Dortmund so far this season in stark contrast to Kagawa who isyet to get on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.

According to reports, Reus has a release clause at Dortmund worth about £30m, giving United hope that a player-plus-cash deal involving Kagawa could see a move come to fruition.

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp enquired about Kagawa in the summer and is desperate to bring his former star back to the Westfalenstadion as a long-term replacement for Mario Gotze – who defected to Bayern Munich.

Klopp is quoted to have said it hurts to see “one of the best players in the world [playing] 20 minutes at Manchester United on the left wing” about their ex-playmaker.

Even so, Klopp may not be willing to part with Reus to land Kagawa, especially in the January transfer window.
