Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill wants Senegal striker Papiss Cisse – but faces a massive bid and fitness gamble to get his man.

O’Neill  is keen to land the strapping forward who plays for German relegation favourites Freiburg.

But Cisse has headed off to the Africa Cup of Nations and is unlikely to be back before the transfer window closes.

Cisse will be sold for around £10million by the Bundesliga outfit, where he has scored nine goals this season despite Freiburg’s dismal form.

But the Black Cats face several problems in trying to complete a deal.

The 26-year-old will be watched during the tournament, although any chance of pushing through a medical during the competition would be difficult in the extreme for buyers.

O’Neill’s side have made a dramatic rise since he took over – but they still lack a striker and Cisse is seen as the ideal replacement for exiled Asamoah Gyan.

Sunderland will back O’Neill with £10m and his spies are pushing hard for the Cisse deal to be pulled off against the odds.

Freiburg priced Cisse out of a move in the last window when Sunderland, Newcastle and Tottenham all took an interest. But their valuation is now more realistic.
