Basketball superstar LeBron James has become a shock new owner of Liverpool.

The world renowned American sportsman has struck a deal with Anfield owners Fenway Sports Group that will give him a minority stake in the English football club.

In a ground-breaking deal, James – who is one of the biggest names in the States after his stirring deeds with Miami Heat – has signed an agreement for Fenway to become his exclusive worldwide representatives.

That means the Boston-based company, headed by Anfield chairman Tom Werner and principal owner John Henry, will get a cut of every deal they strike for the basketball star.

In return, he gets an investment in several Fenway companies, and particularly Liverpool, with 26 year old James admitting: “It is a great opportunity for me. They have 18 Championships – I see myself trying to do something they have.

“The first time I stepped on an NBA court I became a businessman. This is an extension of that, and I am humbled by the opportunity.

“I can’t wait to visit Liverpool.”

James earns close to £10million a year with the Heat, and a further £20million endorsements with Blue Chip companies such as Nike, McDonalds and Coca Cola.

Werner, the chairman of Liverpool and a major stakeholder in Fenway Sports, explained that the move is an extension of the company’s plans to expand globally.

“We are not interested in talent or athlete representation, but we think LeBron is one of the most remarkable athletes of his time,” he said.

“We believe this will be a powerful collaboration. There are very few athletes who can match his global reach, appeal and iconic status. We are very excited that LeBron will be part of the Liverpool FC family.

LeBron and Liverpool each has a powerful presence internationally, with particular strength in Asia, but we feel the business opportunities for both working and being identified together in emerging international markets will result in unforeseen opportunities that neither would have been able to realize alone.

“Without purchasing Liverpool, we would never have been able to have this conversation and make this deal.”
