Wayne Rooney branded Real Madrid bad boy Pepe an ‘idiot’ during El Clasico – and was immediately accused of hypocrisy by Bernabeu legend Guti.

Pepe caused a storm of criticism after appearing to stamp deliberately on the hand of Lionel Messi during Madrid’s 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

Manchester United striker Rooney wrote on Twitter: ‘Pepe. What an idiot. Sometimes people wind u up.’

Injured Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere joined his England team-mate in the criticism, albeit more tamely, by writing: ‘Poor from Pepe!’

Guti, who was vice-captain during his 15 years at the Madrid, also initially described Pepe’s actions as incomprehensible, but didn’t take kindly to Rooney’s criticism.

He tweeted: ‘I laugh at Rooney. There are many saints but in heaven. If you want to be a saint you must practise what you preach. To err is human.’

Rooney was sent off for infamously stamped on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho at the 2006 World Cup, as England were knocked out in the quarter-finals.

He was also accused of stamping on Aalborg’s Kasper Risgard in a Champions League game in 2008, but faced no disciplinary action from UEFA.

Barcelona take home the advantage for the second leg of the quarter-final after coming from behind.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 11th minute, but Carles Puyol equalised four minutes after half time and Eric Abidal scored the winner with 13 minutes to play.
