Manchester United are ready to smash their transfer record to sign Chelsea star Juan Mata.

Old Trafford chiefs are huge admirers of Mata, 25, and are weighing up making a £37m bid. And Mata wants out of Stamford Bridge. The Spain playmaker hasn’t played since New Year’s Day – when he showed his frustration at being substituted against Southampton – and knows he needs football in a World Cup year.

United are concerned Chelsea might turn down an official approach after they did the same when the Blues came calling for Wayne Rooney in the summer. But reports suggest if they bid early enough, giving Jose Mourinho time to bring in a replacement, Chelsea could agree to sell their man if the price is right.

Informal talks have been held between the two clubs but no bid has been lodged – yet.

The huge £37m fee would eclipse the £30m United paid for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.Mata, Chelsea’s player of the year in the last two seasons, arrived at Stamford Bridge for £23.5m in 2011.

However, he has struggled to adapt to Mourinho’s new philosophies.
