Tottenham’s summer spending plans suffered a blow today when a Barcelona agreed a deal to sell striker David Villa to Atletico Madrid, the Catalan club have announced.

The former Valencia man had also attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool but will now stay in Spain after Barca and Atletico agreed a €5.1million fee for the 31-year-old, with €2.1million paid up front with the remaining amount due in installments.

The Spanish champions have also included a 50% sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Villa is Spain’s all-time leading scorer with 56 goals and joined Barca in 2010 and has scored 48 goals in 119 games.

Eric Abidal has also left the Nou Camp today, joining Monaco on a season-long loan, with the option of a further year.
