Chelsea face increased competition from Real Madrid in their pursuit of Douglas Baggio, one of South America’s hottest properties.

The 17-year-old striker was top goalscorer at the recent Under 17 Copa Rio with his club Flamengo, a tournament watched closely by Europe’s leading clubs.

Baggio had already caught the eye of the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan and Napoli, but now La Liga leaders Real have upped the ante with an approach.

Reports in Spain suggest Jose Mourinho will sanction a bid for the player as early as this summer, despite him having yet to make a professional appearance.

Baggio, who is no relation to the Italian legend Roberto, has previously revealed Madrid’s £80million superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as his football idol, something that is likely to be a factor in his next move.

Real’s desire for the player has been accentuated by the loss of their own teen star, Jose Angel Pozo. The 15-year-old striker is set to join Manchester City for £3.5m  this week, when he turns 16.
