Liverpool aim to sign Barcelona defender Martin Montoya as the solution to their problems at full-back.

Managing director Ian Ayre flew to Spain yesterday to discuss the transfer. Liverpool want to recruit Montoya, 22, in January rather than wait until next summer when he is out of contract.Their success will depend on whether Barcelona are prepared to accept a fee for him now rather than risk his value being set by an independent transfer tribunal at the end of the season.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted he would have to strengthen, with left-back Jose Enrique out until February after knee surgery and understudy Aly Cissokho having struggled to make an impact since his loan arrival from Valencia.

Montoya’s ability to play at right-back also raises doubts over Martin Kelly, who has played just 51 minutes this season as he seeks to recover his fitness after missing most of the last campaign with a cruciate knee injury.

And Glen Johnson has just 18 months left on his current deal
