Manchester City have lost one of their most promising youngsters to rivals Barcelona after Juan Angel Roman quit the Barclays Premier League champions for the Nou Camp.

The teenage midfielder returns to his native Spain after spending three years at the Etihad Stadium after arriving from Espanyol for £1million in 2009.

City signed him following a recommendation from Pablo Zabaleta. The Argentine full-back was so impressed with the midfielder during his time at the La Liga club, he told the club’s chiefs to snap him up upon his arrival.

The 19-year-old failed to make a senior appearance for City but admitted his decision to leave Roberto Mancini’s side was a difficult one, thanking the club’s faithful for their support on social networking site Twitter.

He posted: ‘I would like to announce that I will be playing at Barca B for the next 3 years. It hasn’t been an easy decision to leave.

‘Manchester City where I have spent 3 wonderful years, but all in all Barca is the best option to continue my career right now.

‘And would like to give a special mention to all City fans for the support u have given me, which will always stay with me, thank you all!’

Angel Roman will join Barcelona’s B team, where he will look to impress the Catalan giants new boss Tito Vilanova in hope of winning a promotion to the first-team alongside the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi.
