Sir Alex Ferguson will make an audacious bid to snatch Sergio Busquets from Barcelona this summer.

The Manchester United manager has been alerted to Busquets’ contract negotiations at the Nou Camp breaking down.

And the £35million-rated World Cup-winning Spain star will be offered the chance to join United in June.

Busquets, 22, has spent the past five months in negotiations with Barca over a two-year contract extension, but the two parties have failed to reach an agreement.

His agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, has held meetings with Nou Camp sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and vice-president Josep Maria Bertomeu, but money remains the obstacle.

The club have offered Busquets an increase on his current earnings but the player is demanding a better basic salary than the terms on the table.

Ferguson has been on the look out for a new holding midfielder for some time and the sudden change in Busquets’ situation could spell trouble for Michael Carrick.

The Spaniard’s deal with the Catalan club expires in 2013 and the club want him to extend it to 2015.

However, the stalemate over money means Busquets is unwilling to sign, and United are interested.

Ferguson’s scouts have been keeping a close eye on the player and have passed on rave reviews to the Old Trafford gaffer. He will try to exploit the situation to make Busquets a United player.

Orobitg said: “Sergio is a Barca fan and now his head is at the club, but it is normal to consider other options.

“I have received calls from some big clubs asking me about his situation, but his future is in the hands of Barcelona.”
