United failed to land Barcelona’s former Arsenal star nine months ago – but are aware Fabregas’ Nou Camp future is now in doubt. They also know it would take a fee of £45m and wages of £200k a week.

The door was left open for United to return for Fabregas in this summer’s transfer window.

But the final say will rest with United’s new manager, with Holland’s Louis van Gaal becoming frustrated that he still hasn’t been installed as David Moyes’ successor.

That situation is expected to be resolved this week, with Van Gaal having already identified midfield as a priority area to be strengthened.

His targets are Germany’s Toni Kroos, 24, and Marco Reus, 24, Holland’s Kevin Strootman, 24 – and possibly Fabregas, 27 today.

Van Gaal also wants Borussia Dortmund’s £25m-rated centre-back Mats Hummels, 25.

United, meanwhile, are aware Man City are keeping an eye on Fabregas’ situation.

And there could also be competition from former club Arsenal.

On the managerial situation, there is support in the United dressing room for interim boss Ryan Giggs to get the job on a permanent basis.

But Van Gaal is still expected to be appointed this week.
