New Manchester United boss David Moyes has launched a £15million bid to sign Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara.

Moyes has put chief scout Jim Lawlor on the case to set up a deal for Spain Under-21 skipper Alcantara, who is currently on duty at the age-group European Championship in Israel.

Midfielder Alcantara is available as Barca are willing to cash in for big money, and he is growing fed up at a lack of regular game-time.

The young star, who’s also being linked with Manchester City, has been on Moyes’ radar before, but he was out of touch when he was in charge at Everton.

Now though, with the greater financial clout of United behind him, wheels are turning.

Alcantara is represented by Pere Guardiola, brother of ex-Barca coach and incoming Bayern Munich boss Pep, but the new European Cup holders have yet to make a move.

The Mirror understands that Premier League champions United have made contact with the Alcantara camp, with his father – Brazil hero Mazinho – open to the transfer.

United’s new manager has made progress behind the scenes and hopes to put an offer to both club and player shortly.
