Real Madrid have fought off late interest from Chelsea to secure the £27m signing of Benfica full-back Fabio Coentrao.

The Portuguese defender becomes Jose Mourinho’s fifth summer signing but is by some distance the most expensive, following on from the arrival of Turkey internationals Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, winger Jose Callejon from Espanyol and French teenager Rafael Varane.

Coentrao is widely regard as one of the planet’s most exciting attacking full-backs and has for several years been targeted by Europe’s top clubs.

Bayern Munich thought they had secured a deal for the 23 year old last year, while Chelsea latterly opened talks with his club following the appointment of countryman Andre Villas-Boas last month.

However the sway of playing for Europe’s most successful clubs has proved too much for the World Cup star, has completed all the formalities at the Bernabeu.

The switch also ends any faint hope Ashley Cole had of being taken to the Spanish capital by his former boss.

Benfica released a statement ahead of the switch read: ‘Benfica announces that it has reached an initial agreement with Real Madrid for the permanent transfer of the player Fabio Coentrao for the value of €30million.

‘We also announce that the transfer will be formalised once the player completes the medical tests which he will undertake, with the consent of Benfica, and agreement of the contract between the player and Real Madrid.’
