Robin van Persie has shot to the top of Real Madrid’s wanted list and Arsenal fear the striker may be tempted by a move to Spain.

Madrid had been battling Barcelona to try to sign Neymar from Santos, but it now seems the Brazilian is destined for the Nou Camp.

That has made Van Persie Madrid’s No 1 target and the La Liga leaders will test Arsenal’s resolve to keep him with a £25 million bid, with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero also among the Spanish club’s top targets.

City themselves want Van Persie and are prepared to hand him a £200,000-a-week contract. But sources close to the Dutchman are unsure whether he would be prepared to play for a Premier League club other than Arsenal, who will offer their captain a new £125,000-a-week deal, plus a signing-on fee and £5m loyalty bonus to stay.

The board have also discussed rejecting all bids for their top scorer if he does not agree an extension to his current deal that expires in 2013. But there are fears Madrid’s interest could turn the head of Van Persie, who has 37 goals for club and country this season.
