Manchester United have submitted a £25million offer for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera – according to reports in Spain.

While Everton have rebuffed United’s improved £36m double bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, it appears that David Moyes has lined up alternatives.

And 24-year-old Herrera, who impressed against the champions in the Europa League 18 months ago, fits the bill to reinforce the Red Devils midfield ranks.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena COPE – who broke the news that former target Thiago Alcantara had joined Bayern Munich – United made a £25m (€30m) offer for Herrera last night.

However, the ex-Real Zaragoza player has a contract with Athletic until 2016, who will not want to sell given they have lost star men Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente in recent seasons.

If United fail with their initial bid for Herrera, Moyes may be tempted to up his offer to £31m (€36m) and match the Spaniard’s release clause.

Meanwhile, Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa will be staying at Old Trafford this season despite interest from old club Borussia Dortmund.
